About this class

House - all levels About Nicole Klaymoon: For over three decades, Nicole Klaymoon has trained, taught, and practiced across diverse lineages of movement and embodiment. Her foundations include Hatha Yoga, Release Technique, and—over the past 20 years—a deep immersion in Black social dance traditions such as house, popping, waacking, and hip-hop. Klaymoon holds an MFA in Creative Inquiry from the California Institute of Integral Studies and a BA in World Arts and Cultures/Dance from UCLA. She has also trained at the Bates Dance Festival, Illadelph Legends of Hip Hop Festival, and Jacob's Pillow. Her dance is shaped through study and mentorship with Annie Parr, Nancy Stark Smith, d. Sabela Grimes, Maria Gillespie, Anna Halprin, Shinichi Iova-Koga, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Rennie Harris, and other influential artists. A professional choreographer and dancer since 2006, Klaymoon founded Embodiment Project in 2008, which she continues to direct full time. She has served on faculty at Marin Academy and the University of San Francisco, taught in more than 30 public schools, and been a guest choreographer at the University of Arizona, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Mills College. Her honors include the KQED Woman to Watch Award, the NEFA National Dance Project Grant, and the Gerbode Hewlett Commissioning Choreographers Award.
